2+2=5来自英国作家乔治奥威尔的小说《一九八四》。小说讲的是在未来（1984年），英国成为一个由一个人（“老大哥”）绝对控制的社会，不容许人民有怀疑和追求真相的**，所有反对者都会被查出来，逮捕，受到严厉惩罚，**屈服于统治者的意志。

主人公温斯顿史密斯是一个追求**，想反抗“老大哥”的知识分子，他在自己的日记上写过一句话“freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four".后来他被抓到监狱后，思想**为了改造他，举起四根手指，问“如果the party说这是不是四而是五，那是多少呢”史密斯仍说是四，于是思想**对他施行了痛苦至极的刑罚，结果使他承认是五根手指。
